MHF’S CEO invited to attend The WFA (Wheelchair Football Association) End of Season Awards Evening

Posted on June 25th, 2023

Our CEO, Michael McGrath MBE, was delighted to attend The WFA end of season awards recently hosted at Derby County Football Club (Pride Park Stadium) on Sat 15th July 2023. Michael had the honour of presenting the prestigious ‘Barry O’Leary Award for Services to Powerchair Football’ which is sponsored by the Muscle Help Foundation (MHF) charity, to Nick Woodward for his Services to Powerchair Football.

Nick has also recently just completed an epic bike ride to Norway to raise money for the MHF charity. Michael says: “So far Nick has raised a magnificent £771.00 for our charity via his JustGiving page and even though the challenge is complete, there is still time to sponsor Nick for his amazing achievement.”

Nick says:

“I was very proud to receive the ‘Barry O’Leary Services to Powerchair Football Award’ at the Wheelchair Football Association awards. For some years I have been helping the WFA establish a way to stream and commentate on their 250 or so matches a year. The award is in memory of Barry who was a coach, and much more, with Muscle Warriors Powerchair Football Club and the award is sponsored by the Muscle Help Foundation.”

Talking about his recent fundraising endeavour, Nick says:

I decided to cycle to Norway at the start of July, because it is where my grandma was from, and I still have relatives there – none of whom I had seen since Covid.

It was after I received the Barry O’Leary award that I decided it would be appropriate to use the trip and the award as a prompt to raise money for the Muscle Help Foundation which is such a wonderful charity that provides transformational wish-fulfilment experiences to youngsters living with Muscular Dystrophy.

In all, I passed through six countries, England, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, took five ferries, cycled for 10 days covering over 1,500km with 84 hrs in the saddle. My sincere thanks go to everyone that has sponsored me so far and if anyone would still like to, my fundraising page is still open.”
